A Letter from the Director:
I wrote this film with my wife during the months leading up to our daughter’s birth — a time that was terrifying, joyful, overwhelming, and deeply transformative. Becoming a parent changed the way I see time, memory, and responsibility. It made me reflect on my own parents, on what they gave me, and on the love that exists and defies all forces against it. In those first moments hearing my daughter's voice, and holding her, everything I thought I knew about myself changed.
Every idea I had about success or what I wanted to achieve was rewritten. The original draft I'd written for this project was cold, dark, and pessimistic. After Kiyomi was brought into the world, my wife and I added a scene to the end, which explores hope, and the balance a child's perspective can bring.
The film is ultimately for parents and children, for those navigating grief, and for anyone who feels like they’re searching for something just beyond reach. It’s an Asian American story, grounded in a Japanese and immigrant perspective, but its themes are universal.
By backing this project, you’re not just supporting a film—you’re becoming part of a quiet, human story about memory, love, and finding a way to endure. We're doing this a totally independent way, and hope this paves a new way for indie films to come.
